The Second Coming?

From AP:

Conservative leaders voiced dismay Wednesday at news that Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of Dick Cheney, is pregnant, while a gay-rights group said the vice president faces "a lifetime of sleepless nights" for serving in an administration that has opposed recognition of same-sex couples.

Mary Cheney, 37, and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, 45, are expecting a baby in late spring, said Lea Anne McBride, a spokeswoman for the vice president.

"The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward with eager anticipation" to the arrival of their sixth grandchild, McBride said.

Colbert Explains Religion

About 4:30 into this clip:

Rumsfeld On How Not To Lose Iraq: Semantics!

From his memo via the NYT:

Nor did Mr. Rumsfeld seem confident that the administration would readily develop an effective alternative. To limit the political fallout from shifting course, he suggested the administration consider a campaign to lower public expectations.

“Announce that whatever new approach the U.S. decides on, the U.S. is doing so on a trial basis,” he wrote. “This will give us the ability to readjust and move to another course, if necessary, and therefore not ‘lose.’ ”

White Supremacist Finds Out He's a Jew!

I haven't seen anything this funny since Dave Chappelle's Clayton Bigsby, the black white supremacist on Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show, which is possibly the funniest thing ever, and can be seen here.

Now George Allen, pictured with the Council of Christian Conservatives, finds out he's a Jew. This is just too good. The Nation has Allen's quasi-racist history here. And MSNBC has the latest on Allen discovering his Jewish ancestry here.

John Fund Vs. Paul Wolfowitz

From Media Matters: Talking about Al Qaida on Hardball John Fund said:
So they presumed that maybe, if we had a cataclysmic terrorist attack, we might just pull our horns out of the Middle East. And that was ultimately -- or Saudi Arabia, at least. Getting our troops out of Saudi Arabia would have been a signal victory for them. I don't think they anticipated the extent of the attack because our previous responses were so weak.
Of course he was wrong on the facts. Now here's Paul Wolfowitz from his famous Vanity Fair interview on the same subject:
There are a lot of things that are different now, and one that has gone by almost unnoticed--but it's huge--is that by complete mutual agreement between the U.S. and the Saudi government we can now remove almost all of our forces from Saudi Arabia. Their presence there over the last 12 years has been a source of enormous difficulty for a friendly government. It's been a huge recruiting device for al Qaeda. In fact if you look at bin Laden, one of his principle grievances was the presence of so-called crusader forces on the holy land, Mecca and Medina. I think just lifting that burden from the Saudis is itself going to open the door to other positive things.
We have done the exact thing and for the very purpose that John Fund calls capitulation, that John Fund says Osama Bin Laden wanted us to do. Maybe someone will point this out to John Fund?

Bush Blames the Victims

From the NY Times:
More generally, the participants said, the president expressed frustration that Iraqis had not come to appreciate the sacrifices the United States had made in Iraq, and was puzzled as to how a recent anti-American rally in support of Hezbollah in Baghdad could draw such a large crowd. “I do think he was frustrated about why 10,000 Shiites would go into the streets and demonstrate against the United States,” said another person who attended.
Bush made his comments over lunch. I wonder if he blamed the Iraqi people (who are dying by the thousands in Baghdad) for his own failures with food in his mouth?

Say It Ain't So: Papa Bear slams Baby Bear.

O'Reilly blasts "smear merchants" and "vampires" criticizing Mel Gibson; Rivera smears Olbermann, Stewart, and Colbert

Summary: On his Fox News program, Bill O'Reilly called Mel Gibson's recent anti-Semitic comments "inexcusable," but said it is "more important" to discuss the "point where the media and individual Americans start to enjoy the suffering of rich and powerful people." Guest Geraldo Rivera later suggested that O'Reilly refer to "that schmuck from MSNBC," apparently MSNBC host Keith Olbermann; Rivera added that the "schmuck from MSNBC" is a "lowlife." Rivera also asserted that Comedy Central hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert "make a living putting on video of old ladies slipping on ice and people laughing" and that they "exist in a small little place where they count for nothing."

The Bush Economy

In the 5 1/2 years since Bush took office:

The Dow is up 4%
The S&P is down 6%
The Nasdaq is down 24%

Haliburton is up 103%...

The Limbaugh Hannity Lie

How many times have we heard either of them say, "Reagan cut taxes and revenue doubled?" Well it's simply not true. Under Reagan revenue went up from $599.3 billion to $990.7 billion. That's not double, that's 65% over 8 years, or 8% per year.

Now let's consider Jimmy Carter, the worst President ever: Under Carter revenue went from $355.6 billion to $599.3 billion. That's an increase of 68.5% in just 4 years, or 17% per year.

That's right Rush, Sean, revenue grew twice as fast under Jimmy Carter as it did under Ronald Reagan. Now why are you bragging about Reagan doing worse than Jimmy Carter?

How's our current President doing? When he took office revenue was $1991.4 billion. In 2005 it was $2153.9 billion. That's a measly increase of 8% over 4 years, or just 2% per year.

See the pattern? Tax cuts lead to poor revenue performance, just what an honest, sane person might expect. By Hannity's and Limbaugh's logic we should all ask to be paid less so as to have more money in our bank accounts, makes perfect sense really, except for the facts and the logic of course.

From AMERICAblog - Rahm Emanuel makes a funny

White House paying $100,000 salary to "Director of Lessons Learned"
by John in DC - 7/12/2006 11:25:00 AM

Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) offers a few more lessons learned:
Mr. Speaker, yesterday the President said we continue to be wise about how we spend the people's money.

"Then why are we paying over $100,000 for a 'White House Director of Lessons Learned'?

"Maybe I can save the taxpayers $100,000 by running through a few of the lessons this White House should have learned by now.

"Lesson 1: When the Army Chief of Staff and the Secretary of State say you are going to war without enough troops, you're going to war without enough troops.

"Lesson 2: When 8.8 billion dollars of reconstruction funding disappears from Iraq, and 2 billion dollars disappears from Katrina relief, it's time to demand a little accountability.

"Lesson 3: When you've 'turned the corner' in Iraq more times than Danica Patrick at the Indy 500, it means you are going in circles.

"Lesson 4: When the national weather service tells you a category 5 hurricane is heading for New Orleans, a category 5 hurricane is heading to New Orleans.

"I would also ask the President why we're paying for two 'Ethics Advisors' and a 'Director of Fact Checking.'

"They must be the only people in Washington who get more vacation time than the President.

"Maybe the White House could consolidate these positions into a Director of Irony."

What Doesn't Josh Marshall Get?

So on exporting democracy ...

1. President encourages supporters to accuse newspaper reporters of treason: check.

2. President mandates systematic use of torture: check.

3. President routinely asserts right to ignores laws passed by Congress: check.

What am I missing?

Actually, I think it's more one of those trick questions. Like, we're not exporting 'democracy' but our democracy. So, as we send it to them, we lose ours.

Josh may not get it, but luckily for America George Bush does. They hate us because we're free. By making us less free, President Bush is making us less hated, and therefore safer. God bless you President Bush for understanding how dangerous our freedoms are to us...

Colbert Too?

The Boss takes on cable's idiot talking heads while on CNN. Think Progress has the video and full transcript here.

O’BRIEN: There is a whole school of thought, as you well know, that says that musicians – I mean you see it with the Dixie Chicks - you know, go play your music and stop.

SPRINGSTEEN: Well, if you turn it on, present company included, the idiots rambling on on cable television on any given night of the week, and you’re saying that musicians shouldn’t speak up? It’s insane. It’s funny.

He didn't mention Stephen by name, but i think we all know where Bruce was going with this one. You hear that Stephen? The Boss has put you on notice...

Colbert as Stossel

We all saw Colbert ripping off John Stossel (during his early days at WTPS in North Carolina) on the 100th episode of the Colbert Report. And we all saw David Sirota give it to Stephen on the Colbert Report last week.

Now check out David Sirota sticking it to the real John Stossel at Sirota's Blog Here's an excerpt:

Mr. SIROTA: Well, listen, John, I would encourage you stop reciting these dishonest talking points and the chatter you’re hearing on the cocktail party circuit because the stats don’t bear that out in any way at all. And here are the stats that you cannot dispute. In states that have raised the minimum wage, above the federal level, those states have created jobs at a far faster rate than the states that have not. That is because, when you raise the minimum wage, you put money into the pockets of people who will spend it and it spurs the economy. Now, that might not be heard in your book which purports to debunk lies, but those are the facts.

Mr. STOSSEL: Well, if those are the facts, why stop at $7. We should pay everybody 20 bucks, 40 bucks an hour. Then we’ll really have buying power. It’s just…

Mr. SIROTA: You’re changing the subject. You’re changing the subject because you know you’re wrong.

Mr. STOSSEL: Well, the study side, and I now realize who you are because you, on my Amazon page, he came on and said, `I’m a smarmy-looking liar.’

Mr. SIROTA: You are.

Mr. STOSSEL: But that one study was from Robert Reich, former employee. And it’s been widely discredited by every serious economist who looked at this.

Mr. SIROTA: That’s not a study. If you–if you look at the states. Just look at the states. That’s not a study. If you look at the states, the states that have raised their minimum wage higher than the federal level have created jobs faster than states that haven’t. That’s a fact. That’s not a study. That’s a fact.

Sirota really nailed him, so to speak..

Olbermann Destroys Colbert Hero Bill O'Reilly on Malmedy

Crooks and Liars has the video and the story. O'Reilly has never been so brutally exposed as the fool, hypocrite and liar we all know him to be (not even by Al Franken on the Peabody business). Why does Bill hate our troops (and therefore America) so much? And why does Stephen Colbert look up to this clown?

The Department of Homeland Security doesn't think you're worth protecting

No Icons, No Monuments Worth Protecting

June 01, 2006 12:18 PM

Richard Esposito Reports:

New York has no national monuments or icons, according to the Department of Homeland Security form obtained by ABC News. (Click here for the actual document.) That was a key factor used to determine that New York City should have its anti-terror funds slashed by 40 percent--from $207.5 million in 2005 to $124.4 million in 2006.

I like David Sirota

But C'mon, this pimping of his book under the guise of preparing for his appearance on The Colbert Report June 14th is, well, shameless...

As a reader of my blog, you may have heard that I am going to be on the Colbert Report on June 14th. Between now and then, I am going to be preparing for the show - and I need your help. Specifically, I need readers to tell me which sections of my new book Hostile Takeover you think would be best for me to highlight on ColbertÂ’s show.

Remember - Colbert can dominate the person he is interviewing, so I will likely only have a little bit of time to really get the bookÂ’s message out. ThatÂ’s why I need to figure out which sections hit the hardest in the shortest amount of time. As
readers of my past work, your input will be absolutely invaluable. So go pick up a copy of the book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, PowellÂ’s or your local bookstore, thumb through the book, and then email me your specific suggestions.

Colbert can dominate the person he's interviewing? People should buy your book David, but please, let's not blow your credibility with this tripe...

That Was Lame

Colbert tried to make light of being snubbed by the Whitehouse Correspondent Dinner audience on his show Monday night. He jokingly said they were paying him respect with their silence.

That's the best the king of spin can come up with? A lame self deprecating suck up to the crowd? What would Papa Bear have said? He'd have said the Liberal Media didn't want to hear Stephen Colbert speak the truth about the greatness of President Bush. And that's why they sat on their hands, because they hate Bush and hate America. Stephen could've worn their scorn as a badge of honor like a real conservative. But instead he tried to suck up to the same liberal media and Hollywood elites he claims to detest.

BTW, if Colbert hates bears so much, why does he refer to his idol Bill O'Reilly as Papa Bear?

It never ends with this guy.

Colbert Bombs Big Time!

Oh my God, did you see him at the Whitehouse Correspondents Dinner?

Kaboom! He was so busy sucking up to Bush, i don't think he realized he was supposed to be funny. Nobody laughed! And a lot of his sucking up was actually kind of insulting to the President.

What an idiot.
