This isn't just about semantics. Theism-Agnosticism-Atheism are not 3 points on the same line.
Theism is a belief in god (or gods) and atheism is to be without that belief. You either believe in god or you don't. There is no other position. It's not the same question as: does god exist. The question is do you believe god exists.
You can believe in god without knowing god exists. It's called a leap of faith. You can not know if god exists and not make that leap.
Consider alien abductions. I can't say i know they don't happen, so technically i'm agnostic on the subject. But i don't believe they're happening, so i'm also an atheist on the subject.
And there are those who don't know that alien abductions happen (again agnostic) but believe they do: theism.
